You mentioned before that you want to do more in Asia. Can you share your development plans in Asia?
I spent a few weeks in Asia last fall talking to developers and it reinforced for me that we need to do more in the region.
We recently hired a country manager in the Philippines, and we currently have open country manager positions in Indonesia and Singapore, with more openings to come. We also plan to work more closely with Chinese developers. I also know how important localization is to the Chinese market, so we will provide more communication channels and resources for Chinese-speaking developers, creators, and users. Stay tuned for more information later this year.
Solana’s positioning is very clear, what is Base’s positioning? It feels like it does a little bit of everything, but none of them are as thorough as Solana.
Base is a global on-chain economy, and we are making Base accessible to everyone by executing our 2025 strategy while always staying true to our core values (staying true to ourselves). Specifically, this means:
Build powerful and open tools to help anyone build world-class on-chain applications.
Cultivate a vibrant ecosystem, connect open on-chain applications, and expand the Base user base.
Create a powerful on-chain account that provides seamless funding, identity, and management services.
Make Base the center of the on-chain economy, with a highly liquid, always-online global capital market.
Decentralize , scale, and accelerate Base so that everyone around the world can participate in the on-chain economy.
I understand what you said, it is really difficult to meet the needs of everyone, but I believe that if we can execute in these directions, it should be possible. Finally, I have great respect for the Solana team. If we want to bring 100 million people to the chain, this is by no means a single thing that can be accomplished.
What do you think are the biggest challenges and difficulties facing Ethereum at present? Have these difficulties affected the overall development of its ecosystem? What key breakthroughs has Base made in the Ethereum ecosystem? From what perspectives can it help Ethereum solve existing problems?
@brian_armstrong often says: "Things are never as good as they seem, nor as bad as they seem." I've seen a lot of negative news about ETH prices recently, and I think most of them are distractions. I'm more focused on using @base to solve what I think are the key problems and make everything on the chain "run smoothly":
Fast and cheap: Transactions on Base have been running at a cost of less than a cent for over a year. We recently released flashblocks on the testnet, which brings transaction speeds down to 200 milliseconds. Fast and cheap.
· Secure and simple: Smart wallets remove a lot of complexity, helping users who are not familiar with cryptocurrency to get started easily, and only need to be operated in the browser, without the need for additional extensions or applications to be installed. We can also make everything "smooth" by subsidizing Gas fees and recovery functions.
Developer <> User Flywheel: Many people first engage with a token, then want to learn more about other features, but don’t have a clear next step. We’re bringing Farcaster and miniapps to @CoinbaseWallet to make this a seamless integration and help scale this flywheel.
Be low-key and pragmatic, and keep building.
Many original meme projects have emerged on Base, and even some community-initiated "cultural events" have gained good communication power. In Jesse's opinion, are memes and native culture important components of Base's differentiation? How will the Base team further support the development of grassroots meme culture in the future, especially community expression in non-English contexts?
Yes, memes are absolutely part of our culture and a key factor that differentiates Base strategically from other platforms. I once gave a talk about why I think memes are so important in this process. But in short, I think memes are an important user onboarding tool just like they are in Web2. And the meme builders on Base are also our most powerful cultural force. Special thanks to @clankeronbase, @apedotstore, @ClizaSystems and other platforms and communities for their efforts, their efforts have made this possible.
Also, I’ve been talking about “contentcoins” lately. Just like a social media post can be just a picture, or it can become a viral meme, contentcoins are just posts with no expected value. I think a lot of content will turn into memes, and a lot of memes will create content!
How to understand that base is for everyone, why was the official ref token given so quickly?
First, a clarification: Base is for everyone is a post by Base on Zora, not an official token. We have been publishing content on Zora for several years and are very interested in their new model where content is coined.
Why do this? Because unlocking tokens gives creators a powerful tool to earn income through their creativity, while also paving the way for more experimental attempts. There's been a lot of discussion about this, and whether it's a good thing or a bad thing. My take is that people are used to the traditional understanding of tokens, and this is new and different. We expected some criticism, and it did feel a little scary. If I could do it again, I would have @base do more of the announcement and explanation at the beginning.
Going forward, we will continue to mint coins because we believe everyone should bring their own content to the chain. Our goal is to lead by example and experiment in public. If you want to learn more, you can listen to this great podcast below.
Base's future plan is to attract more web2 users to join web3. I have also seen the team communicate to varying degrees around the world to popularize knowledge, etc. What is the main purpose of getting users on the chain? Is it mainly for daily consumption, or mainly for defi and gamefi?
Every day I think about how to bring a billion people on-chain, and the reality is that we can't do that just by attracting people who are already interested in crypto. We need to expand this "pie", and in order to do that, I think the answer is all of the methods mentioned above. Our mission is to build a global on-chain economy that is inclusive of everyone.
Payments are a great example of how on-chain technology can improve people’s lives. I saw firsthand last year while traveling around the world how important foreign exchange and international payments are to people’s access to the global economy. Local currency stablecoins and fast, cheap on-chain payments solve real problems for many people: they are almost instant, unlike traditional payments that take days, and the fees are as low as less than a cent (in USD), rather than 3% or $50 or more.
On-chain finance, social networking, entertainment, music, art, games, content...all of these areas can improve people's lives by giving control to developers and creators rather than concentrating it in the hands of large companies.
Do you think Coinbase Wallet will evolve into the ultimate platform for handling all on-chain transactions, especially in terms of app distribution and promotion? How close are we to this vision?
Coming soon! We’ve spent the last few months rebuilding @CoinbaseWallet from scratch with the goal of making it 10x faster while shifting our focus to solving the problems of discovery and distribution.
Once someone has purchased their first token, it’s not intuitive what to do next or what apps they’re interested in trying. So we’re integrating the Farcaster social feed and mini-app directly into @CoinbaseWallet and making it easy for users to discover on-chain experiences within the app without leaving it.
We see that Base and you personally often interact with Zora. What is the reason why the team or you personally are optimistic about Zora? In the Base ecosystem, what is Zora's special positioning and ecological value?
I’m very bullish on on-chain social networking and its potential to drive virality, and Zora is a great example (if you haven’t downloaded it yet, try this app now).
On traditional social platforms, centralized companies control content and users. On chain social, creators own their content and can earn income (not just likes) when they post content. Posts on Zora are automatically minted, and creators also receive a portion of the revenue from transaction fees. In this way, chain social subverts the traditional model and returns control to creators.
Over the past week or so, I’ve seen firsthand how much potential this model has to attract new users to the space. You don’t need to know anything about crypto to use Zora or earn money from your posts. I think we need more apps like this to help bring a billion people on-chain.
Looking forward to seeing what other developers come up with in this space!
In the 2025 roadmap recently released by Base, the goal of achieving 25 million users, 25,000 developers, and 1 billion on-chain transactions within the year is proposed. What strategies and measures does Base plan to take to achieve these growth goals, and how will these goals be prioritized?
These are what we call “big, bold, ambitious goals.” If we achieve 100% of our goals, we’re not thinking boldly enough, so I ask our team to set bigger goals. If we want to bring a billion people on-chain, this is the strategy we must take.
So, what are we doing to achieve this?
We will invest more in more powerful and open developer tools. We are particularly focused on developers because they will build the applications on the blockchain that will attract a billion users.
Rebuilding @coinbasewallet from scratch to make it 10x faster, easier to use, and improve content discovery by adding Farcaster social feeds, while integrating mini apps so users can experience it without leaving the app.
Continue to decentralize, expand, and accelerate Base, because we believe that the only way to build a truly global economy is to build a decentralized, open platform. Phase 1, 250 mgas/s capacity, and faster blocks.
What areas do you hope developers on Base will focus on? What other important products or categories do you think are missing in the ecosystem?
We just launched Base Batches (basebatches.xyz), which covers four topics: AI, Stablecoins, Mini Apps, and Consumer Apps. I’m really looking forward to seeing developers build more projects in these areas, there are so many opportunities. If you are a developer looking for support from zero to one, welcome to join Base Batches!
Is Farcaster considering fully accepting Chinese users? If Farcaster does not consider it, how will base/coinbase wallet cover different regions and languages?
I know Warpcast isn't localized for Chinese users yet, but I'm very happy to see clients like @tako stepping up to fill that gap. However, there's still a lot of work to be done if we want the Chinese community to fully embrace the network.
This is very important to me and one of the reasons I’m hosting this AMA, in hopes of engaging more directly with the Chinese community. I don’t have specific features or timelines to share at this time, but my team is hiring country leads across Asia, with a particular preference for Chinese speakers, and we’re very focused on building a more inclusive global network.
Base is for everyone — which means we’ll be investing more energy in localizing Base, Farcaster, and the community at large in the future.
What is the path for Coinbase Wallet to integrate Farcaster? How will usage behavior change when users access social content or mini apps through Coinbase Wallet instead of using Warpcast directly?
We are rebuilding Coinbase Wallet from scratch, with plans to include the full Farcaster social feed, as well as mini-apps that can interact directly in the feed. This will start rolling out soon!
I think the power of adding this feature to Coinbase Wallet is that we are able to support existing users in their use cases. Not only does this provide more distribution channels for apps, but it also helps users discover apps they might be interested in. I believe this will lead to more user engagement for developers like you, and I'm very excited about it.
Does Base have plans to issue its own token in the future?
We have no plans to issue a new network token, and Base uses ETH as the native asset to pay for Gas. My biggest focus right now is building an excellent product that can serve developers (people who create applications) as well as users and businesses (people who use these applications) well.
Although Base has promised a multi-signature structure to ensure that it is not affected by Coinbase, in the eyes of the Chinese community, the label of "incubated by CB" and the reason for the name "Base" seem to have been equated to some extent. I would like to ask, how does Base plan to achieve full independence in terms of technology and social aspects in the future, and completely get rid of this label that affects its long-term development?
Base is open and permissionless, and although we are incubated at Coinbase (like many other networks are incubated in labs), we have a deep commitment to decentralization. Why? Because we believe that only on a decentralized platform can we build a global on-chain economy that promotes innovation, creativity, and freedom.
From the beginning, Coinbase and Base have agreed on the principle of neutrality, ensuring user autonomy over their crypto assets, ensuring unbiased ordering of transactions on Base, protecting discretionary rights for non-public data, and guaranteeing that users can withdraw from Base without restrictions. Over the past year, we have focused on achieving the first stage of decentralization, and we will share more progress on this soon.
I also think we need to continue working on building Base as a standalone brand and ecosystem that is perceptually distinct from Coinbase, but also able to take advantage of all the benefits that come from the partnership. We’ll have some interesting content to share on this progress soon :)
What kind of support can Base developers get from the official side? For example, funding, exposure, guidance? What is the best way to get this support?
We are committed to supporting developers at all stages, whether you are just launching your first on-chain experiment or you are scaling a real business, we are here to support you.
I’m super excited to introduce a new program — Base Batches, a global developer program designed to provide developers with everything they need to grow — funding, exposure, mentorship support, community resources, it all.
It's divided into several stages: First, you join the Buildathon in your region (we have events all over the world). If you perform well, you have the opportunity to enter our incubator, where you will receive hands-on support from mentors, Base core team members, and excellent partners. Then there is Demo Day, when the best performing teams will present to a panel of judges and compete for up to $1 million in funding.
This isn’t just a one-time event — we’re building a long-term support system to help you get from the idea stage to gaining traction to growing into a full company, and we want to help you every step of the way.
