PANews reported on April 10 that according to Decrypt, the World Food Program USA currently accepts donations in more than 80 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDC, as well as ApeCoin, BONK and Dogecoin. This cooperation is part of the World Food Program USA's broader goal of raising $25 million through the Emergency Hunger Relief Fund to fill the funding gap in the plan to "provide lifelong assistance to 58 million people on the brink of starvation."
The organization is seeking new donations after the Trump administration halted funding for UN emergency food aid programs in 14 impoverished countries, including Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen. Dorota Amin, chief philanthropy and partnerships officer for the World Food Program in the United States, said the nonprofit is looking to modernize, adding: "Traditional aid systems are under tremendous pressure. Embracing new technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrency is not only a choice, but a necessity." She said that the hunger crisis is worsening at a time when humanitarian budgets are shrinking worldwide, and accepting cryptocurrency donations allows the organization to "engage in a growing community of mission-driven individuals eager to create change."
