PANews reported on May 21 that according to Decrypt, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled in favor of Bitcoin ATM operator Bitcoin Depot, requiring that the $28,000 in cash involved in two fraud cases be returned to the company rather than the victims. The ruling overturned the lower court's decision and determined that the operator had fulfilled its risk warning obligations through pre-transaction warnings. The case involved two scams in July 2023 and February 2024, in which victims were induced to transfer $14,000 worth of Bitcoin through Bitcoin ATMs in Linn County. Judge Dana Oxley pointed out in the verdict that the operator could not identify whether the user was coerced, and the transaction interface clearly required the user to confirm the ownership of the receiving wallet, so it should not be held responsible for the fraud. Data shows that 98.16% of the funds transferred through Bitcoin Depot in the state since October 2023 were related to fraud.

Meanwhile, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is still suing Bitcoin Depot and its peer CoinFlip, accusing the two companies of charging high fees of 23% and 21% and having misleading refund policies.
