PANews reported on May 13 that according to Cointelegraph, U.S. prosecutors recommended that Eric Council Jr., an accomplice in the hacking of the SEC's official X account, be sentenced to two years in prison. Council helped control the SEC account through a SIM card swap attack and released a fake Bitcoin ETF approval tweet in January 2024, causing drastic market fluctuations. Prosecutors pointed out that his crimes involved forged identity documents, wire fraud, and cross-border collaboration. The false news caused the price of Bitcoin to soar by more than $1,000 in a short period of time until former SEC Chairman Gary Gensler clarified it. Council has pleaded guilty and will be sentenced on May 16. This case comes at a time when the Trump administration is replacing interim prosecutors in multiple jurisdictions. The Southern District Court of New York just sentenced Celsius' former CEO Mashinsky to 12 years in prison in December last year.
