PANews reported on May 19 that according to Cointelegraph, Bitcoin developer John Carvalho proposed Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 177 on April 23, aiming to remove satoshis as the basic unit of Bitcoin and split 21 million Bitcoins into 210 trillion units. Previously in 2017, developer Jimmy Song proposed to create "bits" to represent one millionth of a Bitcoin. Carvalho believes that the scheme does not eliminate complexity. Block CEO Jack Dorsey and others support the change. In his X post on May 18, he said that satoshis or sats are too confusing for novices. Swan Bitcoin CEO Cory Klippsten and others opposed it, saying that people can understand the satoshis in Bitcoin just like they understand the cents in the US dollar. In addition, Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto once said that the unit display method can be changed. Since the Taproot upgrade in November 2021, the Bitcoin network has not implemented new improvement proposals.
