OpenAI may be developing a phone that replaces apps with AI agents.

PANews reported on April 28th, citing TechCrunch, that Ming-Chi Kuo, who has repeatedly disclosed Apple's hardware plans, stated that OpenAI is collaborating with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare Precision to develop a smartphone. The chip will be jointly designed by OpenAI, MediaTek, and Qualcomm, with Luxshare Precision serving as a joint design and manufacturing partner. This phone may replace traditional applications with an AI agent, completing tasks by continuously understanding user context and combining small on-device and cloud models to handle different requests. Specifications and suppliers are expected to be finalized by the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027, with mass production expected to begin in 2028. OpenAI's Chief Global Affairs Officer previously stated that the company will launch its first hardware product in the second half of 2026, previously reported to be possibly earbuds.
